William Sparks Thomson was an American corset maker working in London during the 1840s. He designed corsets for a number of royal clients including Queen Victoria. However, these tight-fitting corsets often caused women to faint. His son, a chemist, created a lavender-based smelling salt to revive fainted clients which led to the creation of Crown Perfumery in 1872.
In 1999, the famous English furniture maker Clive Christian bought the historic perfume house and restored a number of its classic fragrances. He used many of the original scents to create new fragrances, and the company now has over 50 perfumes in its catalogue.
